A nice and current shirt this week, this is the 2016/2017 home shirt of German side SV Darmstadt 98.
Known as Die Lilien (The Lilies) they currently languish at the bottom of the Bundesliga with 3 wins, 3 draws and 14 losses so far this season. This doesn’t seemed to have bothered one high profile supporter though, because this week it turns out that Barack Obama, the former President of the United States, follows only one football club on Twitter: SV Darmstadt 98 (@SV98).
The club immediately sought to capitalise, getting their U.S. international striker Terrence Boyd to send a personal video message via Twitter, inviting Obama to attend an upcoming game.
Formed in 1898 they play at the 17000 capacity Jonathan-Heimes-Stadion am Böllenfallto in central Germany. As is often the case in European clubs, they are a multi sport organisation, Sportverein Darmstadt 98 has over 5500 members competing in football, athletics, basketball, judo, table tennis, and also in two unusual sports, competitive hiking and competitive cheerleading.
David Wagner, the current Huddersfield Town manager played 76 times for the club between 1999-2002, but the only English playing connection of any substance I could find was journeyman midfielder Steve Berry who made over 600 club appearances, mostly in England and Wales for eight different football league teams, as well as spells in Hong Kong and with the Lilies in Germany.
